Frequently Asked Questions

When should I consider replacing my roof?

After heavy hail or windstorms in Iowa or Nebraska, inspect your roof for cracked, curled, or missing shingles. Water stains, leaks, or sagging areas often indicate it’s time for a full replacement.

When should I consider replacing my roof?

In cities like Ames and Des Moines, buyers often expect newer, well-maintained roofs. Replacing yours can boost curb appeal, buyer confidence, and overall home value before listing.

How much does a new roof cost?

In Central Iowa, a new roof typically starts around $9,000 and varies with materials and size. Asphalt shingles are most common, offering reliable protection and strong resale value.

How much does it cost to repair a roof?

Minor roof repairs in Iowa often start at $350, with larger leak or flashing fixes reaching $1,500. Prices vary by roof type, damage severity, and local service availability.

How long does a roof last?

In Iowa’s extreme heat and freezing winters, asphalt roofs last 20–25 years, while metal or wood options can exceed 40 years with proper care and annual inspections.

How long does it take to replace a roof?

Most homes in Central Iowa and Eastern Nebraska take about one to two days for a complete roof replacement. Larger or more complex roofs may take an additional day, depending on the weather.

How do I prepare for a roof replacement project?

Before your project, clear your driveway and move outdoor items away from the home. In Des Moines, we handle local dumpster permits and ensure cleanup meets city guidelines.

How do I know which type of roof is the best choice for my home?

For Iowa’s mix of heat, snow, and hail, GAF asphalt shingles are an excellent choice. They provide strong durability, wind resistance, and reliable performance through Midwest weather conditions.

What kind of roof is the cheapest?

Asphalt shingles are the most affordable roofing option we offer. They deliver lasting protection, attractive color choices, and strong performance at a lower upfront cost for Iowa homeowners.

What type of roof lasts the longest?

Metal roofing provides the longest lifespan in Iowa’s climate, often lasting 40 years or more. It resists wind, hail, and temperature swings while maintaining its strength and appearance.

How do I know if I need a new roof or roof repair?

Waddle Exteriors offers free roof inspections for Ames homeowners. Our team checks for storm damage, leaks, and shingle wear to help you decide whether repair or full replacement is best.

What roofing materials can I choose from?

We install GAF asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and wood shakes. As a GAF Master Elite Contractor, we use premium materials known for durability, weather resistance, and lasting curb appeal.

What is the best roofing material?

For homes in Des Moines, GAF architectural asphalt shingles are our top recommendation. They provide excellent hail and wind protection while maintaining a classic Midwest look year-round.

How do I choose the right roofing material?

In many Iowa neighborhoods, homeowners choose materials that match community or HOA requirements. Our experts help you select a roof that complements your home’s style and meets local standards.

Are there eco-friendly roofing materials I can choose from?

Yes, we offer ENERGY STAR-rated options such as cool roof shingles and reflective metal roofing. These materials reduce heat absorption and help improve your home’s energy efficiency across Iowa’s seasons.

What do roof warranties cover?

A roofing warranty generally includes both manufacturer and workmanship coverage. Manufacturers cover material defects, while our 100% labor guarantee protects against installation issues for Iowa homeowners.

What types of roofing warranties are available?

Waddle Exteriors offers multiple warranty tiers, including standard manufacturer coverage, GAF’s Golden Pledge Limited Warranty, and our 100% satisfaction-backed labor guarantee for long-term peace of mind.

Will homeowners insurance pay for a new roof?

Homeowners’ insurance may cover roof replacement if the damage is from hail or wind. Our Story City team assists with documentation and communication to help streamline the restoration process.

How do I choose a roofing contractor?

Look for a contractor with proven experience in your community. Waddle Exteriors has served Iowa homeowners since 1978, combining trusted craftsmanship, certifications, and reliable customer service.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Replaced windows and siding on my house. Very easy to work with from start to finish. The people who came to give me an estimate were kind, respectful, and listened to my goals for the project. The project coordinator kept me updated with when materials would be delivered and projected start dates for the job. She also gave me clear instructions of what I needed to do prior to the start of the project and checked in with me after the project was finished. The project manager and crew were very easy to work and communicate with, flexible with my schedule, and always kept me in the loop of what was going on. The crew did a wonderful job on my house, and showed up to work regardless of the rainy weather. Would 100% trust them to do any home exterior projects.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Contacted Waddle for new Gutter Toppers as ours had hail damage. They are the few contracted installers we could find in our area for that specific product. Tyler came out and was extremely helpful in explaining what needed to be done and walking us through the process with insurance. I felt he was very honest and upfront and great to work with. Dennis came out to install the toppers. He texted when he was on his way and was easy to communicate with. Waiting for our first rain fall but, feel confident we went with a good company should we need any more help down the line.
